GEMÜ has received certification for the R480, R481, R487, R488 Victoria, R470, R471, R477, and R478 Tugela butterfly valves. The DVGW has thus confirmed that the valves are suitable for use with hydrogen in gaseous form. The certification according to DIN EN 13774 and DVGW-CERT ZP4110 applies to all body shapes and pressure ratings of the series mentioned.
The series meet the technical requirements for hydrogen applications. They offer a compact design and short switching times. The valves are suitable for a wide range of media. GEMÜ completed the certification process in February 2026.
The butterfly valves regulate and shut off gas and liquid flows in distribution networks. In secondary processes, the valves control cooling water, gas, and water treatment systems. In power-to-liquid plants, they regulate hydrogen, CO₂, and synthesis gas flows in reactor and supply circuits.
Butterfly valves meet TA-Luft requirements
The butterfly valves use austenitic stainless steel 1.4408 as the disc material. This material is resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. Alternatively, GEMÜ also uses cast duplex steel 1.4469 or spheroidal graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-15 for the centric butterfly valves in the Victoria series.
The sleeves of the butterfly valves are made of elastomers such as EPDM, NBR, or FKM. For higher chemical resistance requirements, the valve manufacturer uses PTFE seals. In addition to the components and sealing materials, all lubricants must also be hydrogen-compatible.
The certified butterfly valves meet the tightness requirements of EN 12266-1/P12 with leak rate A. They are drop- and bubble-tight. The DVGW tests between open and closed operating environments. Increased tightness requirements apply in closed rooms. The valves also meet the requirements of TA-Luft.
In order to be able to carry out leakage measurements with 100 percent hydrogen, GEMÜ commissioned a new test bench for hydrogen valves in July 2025.
